The PhD is intended primarily for persons seeking academic, policy, or research careers. The MS is frequently used in the same way, and can also be a logical entry point for those considering more advanced research (e.g., PhD) or professional degrees (e.g., MD, DVM, DDS). The emphasis in the MS and PhD is more intensively on the content of the discipline rather than its broad application in professional practice. Thus the typical MS or PhD applicant will be evaluated with more focus on the content and quality of the person’s prior academic record, and less weight given to non-academic characteristics. However, it is still important for the applicant to show awareness of the field and motivation for study in a specific area of public health.
The PhD degree is designed to prepare a person for work as an independent scholar. Students admitted to the PhD will generally already have a research-based master’s degree or other evidence of past research experience. If they do not have this, they may be required to seek a master's degree first or to do additional research training at the beginning of their program. The determination of this requirement is made on an individual basis by the faculty in the proposed area of specialization.
