She emphasized the measurable impact of systemic racism

Rebecca Andridge

Associate Professor Rebecca Andridge participated in a conversation aimed at explaining and motivating the importance of critical race theory to statisticians, sponsored by the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Outreach Group, a regular component of Amstat News focused on educating the statistics community.

Andridge shared a redlining map of Columbus and described research by Assistant Professor Jeffrey Wing that finds stroke rates today align with historical redlining practices. She urged statisticians to familiarize themselves with critical race theory language.

Andridge also called on statisticians to interrogate their metrics and ensure their models are measuring all factors of interest in a rich, clear and accurate way. She emphasized that incorporating a critical race theory framework into statistical work is an evidence-based approach.
